An Uplifting Moment in Cork!

Perched on the ramparts of the ancient church with Cork city sprawling out beneath them, they struck up airs that wafted over the rooftops to send out a message of hope and optimism. Project ‘Air on a Shoestring’ is part of a new movement – ‘Positively Cork’ – that aims to galvanise a people who have been beset by a constant barrage of bad news and fiscal rectitude. Ruth Mc Donnell (harp) and Máire de Cógáin (uilean pipes and tin whistle) provided the inspiring music on a bitterly cold and frosty morning. Positively Cork, says Deirdre Seery, is about making 2011 a year of positivity, about bringing people together to do things for themselves and make a difference. Above all, she adds, it is about people remembering the wealth of innate talent that is the hallmark of the Irish, and also that the university city of Cork was named by Lonely Planet as one of the best 10 places to visit in 2010.
